A Woman In An Arranged Marriage Gets Killed By Her Abusive Husband
Being in an arranged marriage is difficult enough because you really don't know much about one another. And it becomes nightmarish when the man that was picked to be your husband turns out to be an abuser. That's what happened to Sabina Akhtar in Britain. She tried to escape a terrible union, but it was to no avail. Her abusive husband wound up stabbing her to death. Here's more on that from the Telegraph:
"THE family of a woman stabbed to death by her husband reacted with fury yesterday after it emerged how he was freed to kill by a legal error.
Malik Mannan murdered wife Sabina Akhtar five days after a prosecuting lawyer said there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him with attacking her 25 TIMES.
Mannan, 36, was yesterday jailed for life at Manchester Crown Court — and told he would serve at least 17 years. Sabina’s uncle Reaz Talukder said outside the court: “Sabina’s parents blame the CPS for their decision not to charge Mannan at an earlier stage.
“This was simply negligence — if they had charged him she might not be dead.”
Mum of one Sabina, 26 — who wed Mannan in an arranged married in Bangladesh — went to the police in July 2008 after a string of beatings from the taxi driver, the court heard.
He had gripped Sabina by the throat, thrown her to the floor and kicked her in the stomach.
In a statement to police, she said: “My husband is a man of an extreme violent nature. If he gets the opportunity, he will kill me.”
Mannan was arrested on suspicion of assault and making threats to kill, but was freed on bail.
Terrified Sabina had a panic alarm fitted at her home and told pals her life was in danger.
Two months later Mannan was arrested for breaching bail conditions, but was freed by the Crown Prosecution Service.
As he swaggered back on to the streets, he texted Sabina to boast: “I am a free man, since 1.30. Case file closed. Isn’t it great.”
Five days later Mannan broke into the marital home in Levenshulme, Manchester, and plunged a kitchen knife into Sabina’s chest.
The CPS yesterday apologised for its handling of the case."(END OF EXCERPT)Read the rest here.
Was this an "honor killing"? That's what some are calling the case of the Muslim television station owner who beheaded his wife in New York.Like Sabina Akhtar, this woman was leaving her husband. Here's more on that story from Yahoo:
"The crime drips with brutal irony: a woman decapitated, allegedly by her estranged husband, in the offices of the television network the couple founded with the hope of countering Muslim stereotypes.
Muzzammil "Mo" Hassan is accused of beheading his wife last week, days after she filed for divorce. Authorities have not discussed the role religion or culture might have played, but the slaying gave rise to speculation that it was the sort of "honor killing" more common in countries half a world away, including the couple's native Pakistan."(END OF EXCERPT)Read the rest here.

Will Rihanna Really Testify Against Chris Brown?
Rihanna's lawyer says that she will testify if she has to against Chris Brown. It's hard to believe that she will really cooperate in the case. But here's more from MTV:
"After Chris Brown was charged with two felony counts on Thursday in connection with his alleged assault on girlfriend Rihanna, the next question became "Will Rihanna testify in the case?"
Brown, 19, was charged with assault and making criminal threats, which, if convicted, could land him more than four years in state prison. "The DAs are facing an uphill battle now if Rihanna isn't cooperating," Los Angeles defense lawyer and former prosecutor Steve Sitkoff told People magazine on Friday (March 6) about the alleged victim in the case, who reportedly reunited with Brown last weekend at a home owned by Diddy in Miami. "At this point, her cooperation can make or break the case. But the DAs may not need her if Brown is willing to strike a plea deal."
When asked if the singer is cooperating with the district attorney's office, Rihanna lawyer Donald Etra told MTV News, "At this point, she is willing to do anything that the law requires her to do. ... If subpoenaed, she will testify." Asked to confirm reports that the couple have reunited since the alleged February 8 incident, Etra said now is "neither the time nor the place to discuss their relationship."
Experts told People that prosecutors will almost certainly subpoena Rihanna as a witness but that she cannot be threatened with jail time if she refuses to take the stand."(END OF EXCERPT)Read the rest here.
Michelle Obama's High School Fling Says That He Always Knew That She Would Make A Difference In The World!
Michelle Obama's ex-boyfriend has nothing but good things to say about his old high school flame. Our new first lady has always had set goals. And it's a good thing that she knew what she wanted in life.Who knows where she would have been today if she would have stuck with this guy? I'm just saying! Some women settle for the first man that excites them. Not Michelle Obama! That's why she is a very accomplished woman who just so happens to be married to the first black president of the United States! If you stay focused on your goals, the sky just might be the limit! Here's more on what her ex had to say from the Telegraph:
"The first boyfriend of Michelle Obama has provided new insights into the First Lady, not to mention a prom night photograph of her in a satin dress with plunging neckline and a high slit.
David Upchurch escorted the then 18-year-old Michelle Robinson to the prom at Whitney M Young High School in Chicago in 1982.
Now a customer service representative and divorced father of three living in a modest house in Colorado Springs, he said that their romance went nowhere.
"I was a screw-up, plain and simple," he told the Enquirer magazine.
He claimed he had "pretty much forgotten" their prom date together and couldn't even recall if it ended with a kiss.
Mr Upchurch, the first of Mrs Obama's former boyfriends to speak publicly about their relationship, knew her family from an early age as they were both raised in Chicago's South Side.
"I grew up with Michelle and her brother Craig. We were neighbours and our families were close."
After his father died, Michelle's father, Fraser, took him "under his wing" and helped him to deal with his loss, he said.
They "began dating" when Michelle was in the middle of her junior year at high school –when she would have been 16 or 17 – and continued to see each other for a year and a half, until she graduated, he said.
"Michelle and I really liked each other, but you know how some high school boys are," he told the magazine.
"We're not ready to be responsible and we screw up. I was a screw-up, plain and simple! At that point, I just didn't take my life or my future seriously."
"But Michelle knew what she wanted, and after graduation she was off to Princeton. I couldn't stand in her way. I wished the best for Michelle because she's always been a wonderful person."(END OF EXCERPT)Read the rest here.
